$15 million in cuts to Chesterfield County budget

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - It was standing room only at Wednesday night's Chesterfield County board meeting just days before board supervisors look to cut $15 million from the budget. Residents are hoping supervisors will reconsider the cuts at hand.

"Right now they're trying to do 100 percent budget cuts towards the park system which is unacceptable. The county motto right now is ‘providing a first choice community through excellence and public service' but if they cut our public services there is no first choice community," said Summer Orcutt.

Cuts to the county's human services are the biggest. 86 jobs are on the chopping block. County libraries could also feel the cuts. The county is looking to keep them open only 5 days a week as opposed to 6. The 95 cent real estate tax rate and of course cuts to education had residents lining the walls ready to speak out in opposition asking the board to reconsider.

"There's other expenditure that are out there that are not necessarily needed," said Heather Hart who spoke out at the meeting.

The $15 million will have to be cut from the 2011 budget with in the coming days. Board supervisors will consider public input before making the final decision.

No decision will be made tonight. But in just over 2 weeks, the budget must be approved. That date is April 14. We will continue to follow this developing story.
