CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency are investigating Massey Energy's mountaintop removal operation at its Bee Tree Mine.
The agency sent Massey's Marfork Coal Co. subsidiary a letter this week seeking a long list of information about the operation. EPA inspectors visited the site earlier this month.
In the letter, the agency said it is concerned about the operation's lack of a "dredge & fill" permit as part of the federal Clean Water Act.
Richmond, Va.-based Massey has 30 days to respond to the letter and provide the information EPA requested.
Company officials say Massey has received the letter and is reviewing it.
