RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Foreclosure filings are down 16 percent in Virginia compared to 2008.
RealtyTrac Inc. said Thursday that 5,484 households were in some stage of foreclosure activity in October. Virginia's foreclosure rate, one in every 597 homes, was the 19th-highest in the country. The national rate was one in every 385 homes.
Nationwide, foreclosure filings increased by 19 percent compared to 2008.
RealtyTrac Senior Vice President Rick Sharga says new state programs aimed at helping homeowners have helped to reduce foreclosure filings.
But RealtyTrac warned that job losses could threaten the trend.
