Va Tech chemist gets grant to study genetic drugs

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) - A chemistry professor at Virginia Tech is getting a $2.3 million grant to develop heart disease and cancer medicines with fewer side effects.

The grant from the National Institutes of Health was awarded to Theresa Reineke.

Her research group is creating carbohydrate-based polymers to deliver genetic drugs to combat cancer and heart disease. The molecules can travel into cells to deliver drugs while scientists can follow their movements through the body.

Reineke said the research will help lead to developing medicines capable of specifically targeting diseases while being less toxic to other parts of the body.
