Consignment business booms in tough economy

HANOVER, VA (WWBT) - Do you have some old toys and clothing that your children barely used, sitting in your home right now? There's a local company that will help you earn some extra bucks by selling those items at huge consignment sales. And, business is booming!

One of those sales starts this week in Mechanicsville. It's one of several a Richmond-based consignment business is adding to its schedule because there's more interest now, than ever before.

It's true everyone loves a bargain.

"It was so handy to be able to just come, shop and find toys, clothes, you name it, all in one location and at a really good price," said consignor and sale shopper Lisa Kiser.

The good prices and tough economy have helped Lisa Martin's consignment business, The Clothesline, take off. Not only are bargain hunters flocking to her sales, a growing number of people are signing up to turn their used items into cash. They get 70% of the sale price.

Becoming a consignor here is a bit like owning your own business: you get a seller number to keep track of what's purchased, you even get to set your own prices, decide if you want there to be a discount or if you want the item donated if it's not sold.

These sales feature used maternity wear, as well as children's items such as clothing and toys. But just like kids outgrow things, Martin's business has already outgrown one location.

"I think people are looking for a way to earn some extra money and people are looking for bargains so this fits both for people," she said.

"It's cash in your pocket, which is a really great thing now.  To just be able to take that cash home, to have it to use it somewhere else or maybe people need to pay bills and it's a way to make that extra dollar now," said Lisa Kiser.

It's too late to sell your items at this week's Mechanicsville sale, but shopping opens to the public Thursday. The site is located at 7019 Mechanicsville Turnpike from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and continues through the weekend.
