RICHMOND, VA (NBC12) - We're following a health alert about the popular dietary supplement, Hydroxycut.
The FDA is warning dieters and body builders to immediately stop using the product because it's been linked to cases of serious liver damage and at least on death.
Government health experts says the company that makes Hydroxycut has agreed to recall all 14 products.
Since Hydroxycut contains a variety of ingredients and herbal extracts, efforts are underway to figure out which one is causing the problem.
"It is possible it is from one active ingredient in that product," said University of North Carolina Professor Macary Marciniak. "It is also possible that it's a combination, a combination of medications that are available in that product."
The person who died was a 19-year-old man.
Dietary supplements aren't as tightly regulated by the government as medications.
Manufacturers don't need to prove to the FDA that their products are safe and effective before they can sell them to consumers.
