Bill Clinton making campaign appearance for Va. Democrat Terry McAuliffe

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Five weeks before Virginia's Democratic gubernatorial primary, Terry McAuliffe's challenge in his first race for elective office is finding a way to win over party loyalists.

His answer is to bring in his political patron, former President Bill Clinton.

McAuliffe is the former Democratic national chairman who helped raise millions of dollars for Bill Clinton's 1992 and 1996 victories and for Hillary Clinton's unsuccessful 2008 bid. McAuliffe will bring the 42nd president to Richmond and Roanoke on Monday.

He's running against two candidates with deep ties on local levels to Democratic Party activists, organizers and elected officeholders. State Sen. R. Creigh Deeds of Bath County has 17 years in Virginia's General Assembly, and Brian J. Moran of Alexandria had 13 years and headed the House Democratic Caucus before he left in December to run for governor full time.
