Residents of the U.S. East Coast need to take steps to prepare for Hurricane Earl, say Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials.
Hurricanes are severe tropical storms that form in the southern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Scientists can now predict hurricanes, but people who live in coastal communities should plan what they will do if they are told to evacuate.
Take the following measures to prepare for a hurricane.
You should stock your home with supplies that may be needed during the emergency period.
Expect the need to evacuate and prepare for it. The National Weather Service will issue a hurricane watch when there is a threat to coastal areas of hurricane conditions within 24-36 hours.
The great majority of injuries during a hurricane are cuts caused by flying glass or other debris. Other injuries include puncture wounds resulting from exposed nails, metal, or glass, and bone fractures.
One of the most dramatic, damaging, and potentially deadly events that occur in this country is a hurricane. The force of the wind alone can cause tremendous devastation.
A landfalling hurricane's intensity is expressed in terms of categories that relate wind speeds and potential damage.
