Chesterfield public schools are going green

Chesterfield County Public Schools are going green while making itself more accessible to the community.

Virginians can now sign up with myDMV to receive their state vehicle registration renewal notices through email or phone, rather than in the mail. 

Using a PIN, customers opt to receive reminders via email or phone, and can manage their DMV records without visiting an office. They can also conduct secure transactions such as renewing driver's licenses or ID cards, and obtain information specific to them, such as their driving record.

Area schools compete for $20,000 in national contest

In a time of severe budget cuts, $20,000 goes a long way. Two area elementary schools are determined to get that money.  But they're competing against each other -- and 98 other schools nationwide.

Virginia's sales tax holiday on hurricane preparedness items runs from May 25 - 31.  Emergency items such as batteries, flashlights, bottled water and first aid kits that cost $60 or less will be exempt from the 5 percent state and local sales tax. Generators and other bigger-ticket items that cost $1,000 or less also are exempt. Click on the link for a complete list of tax-exempt products.
