2 killed in head-on crash in Spotsylvania

SPOTSYLVANIA, VA (WWBT) - Two people were killed in a crash in Spotsylvania County on Sunday night.

Virginia State Police said the crash occurred just after 10 p.m. on Courthouse Road about a half mile south of Smith Station Road.

A 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier was traveling west in the eastbound lane when it hit a 2013 Ford Fusion head-on.

Two adults in the Cavalier, including the driver, died at the scene. Two other adults and a child riding in the vehicle were injured, as well as the driver of the Ford Fusion.

The driver was identified as Stephany L. Hartley, 29, of Locust Grove. The deceased passenger was identified as Richard M. Van Houten, 20, of Woodbridge. Neither was wearing a seat belt.

Neither of the other adults in the Cavalier were wearing seat belts, but the child was secured in a child safety seat.

All of the passengers and the driver of the Ford were transported to Mary Washington Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The crash is under investigation.
