Nearby school construction closes Chesterfield park for at least a year

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Harrowgate Park is now closed due to the construction of a new elementary school.

The closure is expected to last for 12-18 months for the construction of the new Harrowgate Elementary School and improvement at the rear of the park.

Stuart Connock, the chief of Parks, Planning, and Construction Services for Chesterfield County, says last summer he was told by the school division the current Harrowgate Elementary School could not be renovated and the school system was looking for a new location.

"Right there at the park, next to the middle school, made the most sense. They can do cross programming between the two, parents don’t have to go to two places,” said Connock.

After the construction is finished, Connock says the park won’t just be better, but bigger too. The county purchased 26 acres of neighboring property, that will include new trails across the street.

Construction will also include a new entrance.

“The back of the field will still have a baseball field, tennis court, basketball courts, so it will still be in use, we just won’t be able to get to them. So one of the projects is building an entrance to the rear of the park off Harrow Road,” said Connock.

All park facilities will be closed to the public during this time.
