Richmond law firm offers free rides on New Year’s Eve

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A local law firm is offering a lift home on New Year’s Eve for people in the Richmond area, pun intended.

Allen & Allen is partnering with the ride sharing app Lyft for the “Sober Ride Home” program, now in its seventh year.

“Allen & Allen is always concerned about protecting the injured,” said Attorney Trent Kerns. “We’ve been protecting them for over 100 years. If we can keep one drunk driver off the roadways this year at New Year’s Eve, we feel that we’ve done a good thing.”

Kerns said many of the clients they have at Allen & Allen are people who were injured by drunk drivers.

The program does have some stipulations though.

"You have to be within the greater Richmond area,” Kerns said. “It will take them up to 20 miles and we will pay their complete fair up to $50."

That doesn't mean you can use the service to go bar hopping though. This opportunity is specifically meant for people getting home.

"We've had lots of feedback from social media about what a good program this is," Kerns said.

Speaking of social media, you’ll have to check the Allen & Allen Facebook page at 10 p.m. and midnight on New Years Eve in order to get the codes for this free ride.

Once you download the Lyft app on your phone you'll be able to enter those promo codes in for your ride.

"We just feel it's very important for people who are drinking who've had that one too many off the roadway," Kerns said.

According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, every two minutes someone is injured in a drunk driving crash.

It's not uncommon to see law enforcement step up patrol around the holidays, but they encourage NYE goers to put together a safety plan on how you're getting home on the last day of the year.

"I believe we've helped hundreds of people of people get home on New Years Eve that shouldn't have been driving," Kerns said.

They are offering a limited number of rides for this program, however that number was not readily available.
