Impaired driving incident leads to multiple charges for wanted man

STAFFORD, VA (WWBT) - A Bumpass man was arrested following an impaired driving incident in the area of Route 17 and Poplar Road on Wednesday, Dec. 12.

The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office received multiple reports of a reckless driver traveling with hazard lights on, swerving and almost crashing into vehicles.

Stafford sheriffs located the suspect in the Walmart parking lot located at 11 Village Parkway.

The vehicle had a shattered windshield and broken headlight.

Two occupants were in the vehicle. The driver had bloodshot eyes and a slurred speech.

The driver was identified as 37-year-old John Bernard Lillis, Jr., after initially providing a false identity.

Lillis was taken into custody after field sobriety tests were conducted. Deputies learned that Lillis was wanted out of Stafford County for probation violation and out of Prince William County for shoplifting. He was also driving on a suspended license.

Several controlled substances and ammunition were found in the vehicle.

The juvenile passenger also admitted to using a controlled substance. He has since been released to the custody of a family member.

Lillis was served his outstanding warrants and charged with possession of controlled substances, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, providing false identification to law enforcement, driving under the influence, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, driving while suspended, identity theft to avoid arrest and defective equipment.

He is currently incarcerated at Rappahannock Regional Jail.
