Genetic testing available to detect breast cancer

HCA Neighborhood Health Watch: Genetic testing for breast cancer

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - About 5 to 10 percent of breast cancer cases are thought to be hereditary, meaning that they result directly from gene defects passed on from a parent.

BRCA1 and BRCA2 are the most common causes of hereditary breast cancer. That has many women wondering if they need genetic testing to see if they’re at risk.

Dr. Diane Cox from the Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute at Johnston Willis Hospital explains who needs genetic testings, reasons for doing it and the ramifications of positive results.
